Math Camp 101 COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog Iâm sure by now youâve heard that economics and other quantitative coursework are key components of international and public affairs. One of the ways SIPA tries to prepare incoming students for the quantitative courses theyâll be taking is Math Camp. But, what is Math Camp? Do students go camping in the woods and recite the multiplication table around a fire? Not exactly. But, itâs almost just as fun! What is Math Camp? Math Camp is held in during orientation week for incoming students starting the fall semester. Starting on the second day of orientation, you and your classmates will be participating in Math Camp and learning from one of our great Microeconomics or Macroeconomics professors. It is strongly recommended for all first-year students attend. You start off reviewing algebra and eventually move to calculus. Math Camp culminates in a mandatory take-home Math Quiz that helps determine the studentâs proficiency. The scores donât count towards your GPA, but does determine if youâre eligible for Math Lab, which are Saturday courses to continue reviewing math skills, or a private tutor to help you master the skills. Whatâs the point of Math Camp? Donât remember how to do derivatives or what a log is? For the students who are not comfortable in math or have not taken a math course in a while, Math Camp is a great refresher course. Some of our core classes do require some math skills and so to be successful in Microeconomics and Quantitative Analysis I, feeling confident in doing algebra and calculus is crucial. Perspective from students who just took Math Camp Steven Reid, IFEP concentration, said that âIt was useful. I took pre-Calculus and Calculus in undergrad, so it was good to do a refresher. It kind of helps for 6400, but the pace of 6400 is super fast so it gives a little bit of a foundation but doing some micro and macro theory or intro will probably prepare you better. [Math Camp] might do more for 6300.â Note: There are two levels of Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. Theyâre referred to as â6300â and â6400â by students. Both cover the basics of economic theory, but â6400â is considered to be more math-heavy and â6300â is more theoretical. Marta Aparicio, USP concentration, said that âPrior to SIPA, I only did math in high school, which was up to pre-calc. Iâve tutored high school students in algebra, so some of the concepts were fresh in my mind. ⦠Math camp was helpful in terms of the material that we were provided with the explanations, examples, and practice problems.â Marta recommends students to spend time reviewing the materials given â" watch online videos, do the practice problems, and review the concepts herself in order to prepare for the math quiz and upcoming courses.

Where Should I Apply to Medical School

Choosing to tackle medical school and working hard to become competitive is a huge accomplishment, but narrowing down what medical schools to apply to train at can be a little daunting. Iââ¬â¢ll walk through some important questions and points to consider that I used to narrow down the 14 schools I applied to. With this yearââ¬â¢s application season coming up in a few months, now would be a good time to start researching schools that maybe you havenââ¬â¢t been in close contact with. Below are some solid questions that will help eliminate a huge chunk of schools, and begin narrowing down your top choices, your ââ¬Å"reachâ⬠schools, and ââ¬Å"safeâ⬠schools. I would recommend using this part of the AAMCââ¬â¢s website that lists each state, their medical schools, and has links to each school as you answer the questions below. Remember, you are the consumer in education, so be empowered that you have choice in this process. How important is location to you? Yeah, Hawaii does sound awesome for medical school, but thatââ¬â¢s a long way from home for most, and makes breaks a little harder. I usually advise pre-meds to look at places within driving distance of family (6-8 hours) or near a major airport that has reasonable flights back home. When I get a break (which are much shorter than undergrad), I usually want to see family and catch up with old friends. Lifestyle is so important, because when I have downtime, I love being in the Appalachian Mountains so I can hike, cliff jump off of waterfalls, and enjoy a beautiful 4 seasons. Do you want a big city or do you like the countryside? Pick places that can support your hobbies and lifestyle, because 4 years is a long time to be bored. What state do you have residency? Youââ¬â¢ll be hard pressed to get accepted to a state school if you arenââ¬â¢t a resident of that state or have pretty outstanding scores. Private schools pay no attention to your residency status because they arenââ¬â¢t funded through state tax dollars (donââ¬â¢t worry, they make it up through your tuition). I always tell pre-meds to look hard at their state schools, because thatââ¬â¢s where they have the highest chance of acceptance and it will be the most affordable option. Remember, medical education is so standardized that it really is the same everywhere, so look at the value of what youââ¬â¢re getting for the price you pay. How competitive are you? Be realistic with your numbers, and research average acceptance scores for schools youââ¬â¢re interested in, but also remember that these are averages. If youââ¬â¢re a couple points below their average MCAT or GPA, donââ¬â¢t worry, that means youââ¬â¢re still competitive for an interview, and can earn yourself a spot. So you got a 26? Maybe Harvard is out of reach, but your state school is still a viable option. Be honest with yourself, but donââ¬â¢t sell yourself short. What was your impression of admissions and student body? I called admissions of over 20 medical schools just to chat, and get a feel for the people and culture. I also met with several at medical school recruitment fairs, and was able to quickly eliminate a few, because frankly, I was rubbed the wrong way. First impressions say a lot, so use your gut, and how you feel when interacting with people that represent institutions. See if you can get in touch with some medical students can you see yourself being mentored by these individuals? Do you like a big student body that you can get lost in or do you like a family environment? I know youââ¬â¢ve been taught to be a pauper, begging at the doors of medical schools to just get an acceptance, but honestly, you have more control in this process than you think, so be strategic, and only pursue places youââ¬â¢d genuinely and realistically be interested in attending. Also, I recommend applying to around 10 schools, and if you need help financing the application process, the Fee Assistance Program through the AAMCà is a great way to pay for 14 schools, and waives the secondary application fee at most institutions.
